What Is an Infectious Disease?

Infectious diseases are ones due to the presence of pathogenic microbial agents in human host cells. Processes annotated in this category include the life cycles of SARS-CoV viruses, influenza virus and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), some metabolic processes mediated by intracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the actions of clostridial, anthrax, and diphtheria toxins, and the entry of Listeria monocytogenes into human cells.

Infectious diseases are illnesses caused by bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic organisms.

  • Bacterial: One-cell organisms that cause illnesses such as urinary tract infections, tuberculosis, and strep throat
  • Viral: Organisms that are even smaller than bacteria and can cause many different diseases from the common cold or cold sores to Ebola or HIV/AIDS
  • Fungal: These often cause skin diseases such as athlete’s foot or ringworm, or yeast infections. Some types can cause infections in your nervous system or lungs
  • Parasitic: Organisms that live in or on your body, and are often transmitted through bug bites or via food or water that has been contaminated with animal feces. Can cause a number of diseases, such as malaria or tapeworm

How Are Infectious Diseases Commonly Spread?

  • Person-to-person contact through skin wounds.
Any object has the potential to be a carrier of an infectious agent. Dirty clothes and linens, utensils and unsterilised hospital equipment are some examples of a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites.
  • Droplets in the air, e.g., when an infected person coughs or sneezes
